The research focus group in Land Law is convened by the University of Cape Town’s Department of Private Law. It brings together final-year and post-graduate law students with an interest in Land Law, Property Law, Housing Law, Natural Resources and/or Land Reform. The focus group guides its participants through various topical themes of modern land law and provides opportunities to develop ideas for independent research papers and theses. It is a platform for discussion which stimulates critical thinking and fosters independent research skills.

Structure
The research focus group in land law is structured around regular weekly meetings for the discussion of topical issues in South African Land Law. It relies on extensive student participation and involvement. Participants are allocated particular themes from current debates or specific focus areas relating to South African land law and policy, to monitor and analyse. Some of these comments are posted on this website.

Themes
Topics covered include, among others: reform of expropriation law; policies on foreign landownership; land reform; developments in mineral and petroleum law; reform of the land registration system; share blocks, sectional title and time-sharing; neighbor law; communal tenure; land regimes in transition; delivery on housing and access to land; influence of the Constitution on the development of Land Law.
